TEML was created by Marc Talcott in December 2024. No one, he reasoned, was going to grant permission to standardize a text language for Event Modeling, and waiting for someone else to do it might take forever. So he started it himself.

Marc has been a professional software developer since 2000, working mostly in .NET. Along the way he co-founded a .NET web hosting company, and since 2017 he has built billing and payment systems at the company where he now leads platform engineering. There, he introduced Event Sourcing to his finance team and made Event Modeling part of how the team designs software.

He was writing Event Models as text, first in Obsidian and then in Emacs, before TEML existed. Since starting the project, he has also written teml-draw, a Neovim plugin that draws an Event Model from a TEML file.

Marc studied computer science at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Outside of software, he is a photographer and runs a small organic farm and nursery.

TEML is open source and is shaped by feedback from the people who use it.
